Prosthetic Dentistry and Orthodontics

The purpose of teaching and studying prosthetic dentistry is to acquire by students scientific knowledge about the prevention, etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of developmental anomalies, acquired defects, injuries, deformities and functional disorders of the masticatory apparatus and other organs of the dentoalveolar system, as well as in training specialists with the basics of clinical thinking, who are able to conduct an examination, make and substantiate a diagnosis, draw up a plan for the management of patients and have mastered the basic manual skills in carrying out prosthetic treatment of dental diseases.

The study of the discipline «prosthetic dentistry» allows you to master knowledge about the mechanisms of development of dental diseases, methods of their prevention and prosthetic treatment, which is a prerequisite for the successful mastering of such disciplines as: 

  • «Therapeutic dentistry»,
  • «Maxillofacial Surgery»,
  • «Pediatric Dentistry and Prevention of Dental Diseases»,
  • «Orthodontics»,
  • «Communal Dentistry».

Restoration of chewing efficiency in patients with dental diseases is possible only with an integrated approach, with the participation of dentists-orthodontists, dentists-pediatricians, dentists-therapists, dentists-surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons.

In this complex, prosthetic dentistry is the final link in the rehabilitation of patients with dental diseases. Therefore, the study of this discipline ensures timely and correct recognition, the choice of adequate methods of treatment and prevention of dental diseases by a dentist-prosthodontist.

The department carries out methodological management of  practice of 4th year students of the dental faculty and medical faculty of foreign students, management of intern doctors.

The department provides methodological guidance and training of clinical residents. On average, 35-40 specialists are trained annually (full-time and part-time education).

At the department of prosthetic dentistry for 5th year students, elective courses are held in the discipline «Prosthetic dentistry»: «Fundamentals of functional occlusion», «Aesthetic prosthodontics», «Fundamentals of functional occlusion». 

Master's degree students are also trained. HIGHER EDUCATION. SECOND STAGE (MASTER) Specialty 1-79 01 07 Dentistry. 4 curricula (modules) of the institution of higher education have been developed for the module for specialty 1-79 80 26 «Dentistry», «Profiling Prosthetic dentistry».

The department of prosthetic dentistry provides methodological guidance for the training of interns in the Vitebsk and Brest regions. Since 2019, the department of prosthetic dentistry has been conducting advanced training courses for dentists «Modern methods of medical rehabilitation of patients with defects in teeth and dentition».

Orthodontics

The Department of Orthodontics of the Belarusian State Medical University was established on July 5, 2000. Since its foundation, it has been headed by Professor I. V. Tokarevich. The main task of the department is theoretical and practical training of students of the Dentistry Faculty in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental anomalies in different periods of bite formation. Currently, the Department of Orthodontics is represented by 21 teachers, seven of whom have an academic degree – 1 doctor and 6 PhD of medical Sciences. There are preparing to defend 4 dissertations for the degree of PhD of Medical Sciences.

Training at the department is conducted in the form of lectures and practical classes, during which students of the Dentistry Faculty acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in orthodontics. Much attention is paid to modern educational and certification technologies. For intermediate and final control of students ' knowledge, as well as certification of graduates, the department has developed and implemented a computer program for test control.

The Department of Orthodontics has a modern dental laboratory, where students and clinical residents are trained in the manufacture of orthodontic appliances using new technologies.

To increase interest in orthodontics as a specialty, to identify talents among future doctors, the department annually holds a competition of practical skills 'The best in the profession', which in 2008 received an international status – students of dental faculties of Ukraine and Russia universities take part in the competition.

Medical and advisory assistance to the population is provided by the cathedral staff at the bases of the Republican Clinical Dental Polyclinic and a number of city polyclinics. Teachers of the department are actively working on the training of clinical residents. The training of residents is conducted in two forms-full-time (lasting two years) and part-time (lasting three years). Every year, about 25 people from the Republic of Belarus and other countries are trained.

The main task of the department: theoretical and practical training of students in a comprehensive and individual
approach to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental anomalies in different periods of bite formation.
